Congo — UN Alarmed At Escalation Of Violence As Thousands Flee Congo

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), reported recently about the increase of violence in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Most have fled their homes in the South Kivu Province because they found themselves in the middle of the war between the two fighting groups, relates UNHCR

More than 7000 persons have fled to Burundi.

More than 1200 persons, made up of mostly women and children, fled to Tanzania by boat.

In December 2017, a rebel attack in Congo's north Kivu province, left 14 Tanzanian peacekeepers dead and dozens wounded

A Pakistani peacekeeper was ambushed and killed by rebels last weekend.
There have also been reports of forced recruitment by the rebels.

The United Nation's mission in Congo has sent some 18,000 troops at a cost of more than $1bn a year, making it the the largest UN mission in the world.
